It’s official, Atari is getting back into the hardware console business.

This news comes as the company’s CEO, Fred Chesnais, told GamesBeat that they’ve been hard at work on a new console. There aren’t much details at this time, but from the title of their teaser video, it seems to have been years in the making.

The video is hosted on a channel called ‘Ataribox’, so maybe that’s the name of the console?

The video seems to showcase a render of what the console may look like, but of course there isn’t much to work with.

There are no details beyond this revelation, but many are speculating that the company may start tapping into the cash cow retro market. It would be unwise for Atari to try to compete with the likes of the PlayStation and Xbox brands (for now at least).

Given that this new console has been in the making for some time now, we also think that the hardware may be geared towards older-school games.

It’s too early to say though.

Atari filed for bankruptcy in 2013, but Chesnais took ownership and turned it around by developing a mobile gaming division, and also licensing the name in the Blade Runner 2049 film.
