Sometimes I like to record a snippet of what I’m listening to on my phone’s iTunes player to post to Instagram or WhatsApp. I’d usually take the lazy route and just screen record the song that’s playing and post that clip.
However it seems that Apple may be cracking down on this. My friend recently asked me if I had issues recording songs via the inbuilt iOS screen recorder. I gave it a go and found that I could no longer record any songs that were being played via the iTunes player (3rd party music apps didn’t work either). However it works perfectly when playing audio from the YouTube app or via any browser.
After a bit of Googling, I found a few threads on Apple’s support forums reporting similar issues. I checked the iOS changelogs but saw nothing covering such a change, so I assumed it might have been a bug that went by unnoticed.
I spoke to an Apple support agent and they also could not point me to anywhere confirming that this was indeed a change, but he did mention that it might have been done recently for copyright related reasons. His senior manager was unable to confirm the change either.
If Apple is indeed blocking the audio track during screen recordings in its music app, I personally do not have an issue with that change. I could understand where they are coming from, as recorded videos could easily be stripped apart and exported as MP3s via torrents and other illegal music download websites.
