Apple LG 5K monitors flicker when too close to a WiFi router

Apple has recommended that MacBook Pro customers purchase LG UltraFine 5K monitors, as they’ve discontinued production of their in house thunderbolt displays.

But there’s a problem.

The 27 inch, 5120 x 2880 display which is on sale for $974, apparently flickers when placed too close to wireless routers, and by too close, we mean a whole 2 meters (about 6.5 feet) away. The monitor becomes totally useless if their router is right next to it.

The UltraFine 5K monitor is being officially recommended as a replacement for Apple’s in house thunderbolt monitors, as the tech giant no longer produces them. The LG monitor lacks the usual Apple quality built, and the ability to be daisy-chained together, but it is the closest retina-display that matches up to what Apple offered.

LG officially acknowledged the issue, and recommends placing WiFi routers far away from the display to prevent flickering.

Zac Hill of 9to5Mac got in contact with LG and got the following response.

“The issue that you are having only happens for the 5K monitors we have, not to other LG monitors. We recommend to have the router placed at least 2 meters away from the monitor. If the same issue persists, please let us know so we can assist you accordingly.”

Those speculating about the issue think it’s a potential case of poor EM shielding, resulting in the WiFi’s signal interfering with that of the monitor.

If you’re one to have your WiFi router nearby and experience this issue, try to place it a bit further away until the flickering stops. If your mom’s basement doesn’t have enough physical space, then it’s time to move out of your mom’s basement.

Update – 1st February 2017 – Correction to resolution size.
