Niantic finally announced that they will bring Legendary Pokemon to Pokemon GO after this weekend. The first Legendary will be available during the Pokemon Go Fest event in Grant Park, Chicago on July 22.

In order for the Legendary to show up, players around the globe must catch enough Pokemon during the Pokemon Go Fest Challenge Windows.

After the requirements are met, the Legendary will appear as an egg in Grant Park and will act as a raid battle.

If, and only if, players defeat the Legendary in Chicago then that Pokemon will be available to battle worldwide.

It’s unclear what the Legendary might be, but the trailer suggests it’ll either be Zapdos, Articuno, Moltres or Lugia, with a slight possibility for Mewtwo.

If all goes well this weekend, Legendary Pokemon will show up as eggs in Gyms everywhere. Each battle will be no less than a Five Star raid so let’s hope you’ve been training.

There is at least one downside of Legendary Pokemon though, you cannot use them to defend a Gym. Niantic made a logical move considering the alternative would be Gyms overflowing with unstoppable Pokemon.

Players have been waiting for this update ever since Pokemon GO launched one year ago. Niantic hasn’t stated what will happen if the players fail to succeed in the event so for everyone’s sake, win!

If you’re not able to make it up to Chicago, don’t worry, Niantic will be live-streaming the event on Twitch.

In the meantime, check out the Legendary Update trailer below:
